STATESBORO — The Division of Continuing Education at Georgia Southern University now offers an outstanding opportunity for individuals looking to start a career in the field of law through their Paralegal Certificate program. The program will offer courses simultaneously in both Statesboro and Savannah, Georgia throughout 2012 in order to offer an ideal location to individuals in the surrounding area.
The program consists of 13 courses at a price of $290 per course. Students are responsible for securing their own books, which can only be purchased online from other vendors. Each course meets one night per week for three hours over a total of six weeks. Students can arrange their own schedule at their convenience by taking one to four courses per six week session. Students who complete two courses each session can expect to graduate in twelve months, while one could take four courses each session and graduate in six months. Students must complete the program within three years to obtain certification.
Each course is taught in a classroom setting in order to create interaction with the instructor and other students. Students will receive hands on research experience, tour the Bulloch County Court House, visit a courtroom, do a title search in Bulloch County, design and perform “good lawyer/bad lawyer” commercials, visit law firms in Bulloch and Chatham County, and enjoy enlightening and entertaining guest speakers.
Students must have a high school diploma or GED, good computer skills, and Internet access to enter the program. Paralegals work side by side with attorneys in performing duties that include: research, typing briefs, appeals, complaints, answers, interrogatories, letters, and other documents. Paralegals need to be familiar with moving, using, and saving files in MS Word for routine legal office purposes. Along with a professional appearance and conduct, an excellent command of English grammar, composition, punctuation, spelling, and proofreading skills are mandatory.
The United States Department of Labor has rated the paralegal professional as one of the fastest growing professions in the nation. Georgia Southern University’s Division of Continuing Education’s Paralegal Certificate program adheres to the highest professional curriculum and prepares individuals to work in law offices, banks, government agencies, corporations and real estate firms.
